LIB200- Blog #9 Final Reflection

My perspective about science and the humanities has somewhat changed from the start of the course because I didn’t look at big image. The critical thinking blogs did help me understand the course a bit more. With the blogs I was able to go back like they are my notes of certain things to help me with my essays. I also view other blogger and they could construct things a tad more clearly. It helped me understand subjects in the course. Science and technology is used for everyday in human life. We use phones, computers, ipads etc to connect to the internet. We also go to work and school, socialize with peers and associates. Blogging is a way to communicate where we talk and learn about news and others. To say that blogging is a way of modern technology and in a means a word of mouth epidemic. I am more optimistic of science and the technologies because I studied it in course for three months. I also can say that I am a person of both science and humanities because I use it daily, need i...

LIB 200- Blog # 8

I feel that the responsibilities of a scientist are to make sure that they are able to control their work and know that there will not be an outbreak. It is to secure the existence of humanity. The scientific progress of having something go wrong is always a possibility. The reason for it is to check if there is opportunity of something new whether its life, or disease. It is the likelihood of knowing if something can be done to protect man kind or go against it. Science has unintended consequences. Take Futurama exhibit in the World’s Fair for instance. It was to benefit the American people after the war. It was supposed to improve lives and technology by having automobiles, superhighways, and a suburbia. The perfect world, a utopia but in fact it that would lead to global warming. Or take artificial intelligence for instance. Scientist built something that can completely one day take over humanity. One example of that is going online, making a profile and then entering a captcha a...

Critical Thinking Blog Post #7

This weeks blog I wanted to write it on a female scientist named Rosalind Franklin. With a short life span of thirty-seven years, Franklin was a distributer to the structure of DNA. She had a tough life growing up with the fact that she was a woman. At the time women where not taken seriously in the scientific field. She did not receive fair treatment but she was able to contribute an understanding of “essential roles in cells metabolism and genetics.” She was intelligent and the structure helped scientists understand how genetic information is passed from parents to children. During her life’s work she faced sexism and she was not recognized for her work. She did not always see eye to eye with her male scientist. Raymond Gossling took a picture of Franklin’s image of an x-ray diffraction of DNA. With out her knowledge it was distributed around to James D. Watson, Maurice Wilkins, and Francis Crick where Franklin was not recognized. She did help bridge both cultures between scienc...

LIB200 Assignment 5

The vision of a ‘perfect’ superhighway future in the 1939 World’s Fair was hype than reality as the fair created real problem with its vision of suburbia and cars. I agree with World’s Fair being more of propaganda to the American people. The World’s fair was to get people to become stable after the war. The vision was for anyone to have the American dream of owning their own home in the Suburbs and having a car. No one wanted a life of crime, hate, and to be underprivileged and that was the city life. It was full of “noise and fumes and shouts and shrillness and ambulances, drunks, fire trucks stuck in traffic, angry cops” (Gelernter 25). The streets were dangerous and no parent would want their child to grow up in a ugly, dirty and unhealthy environment. Living in the suburbs in the future would be “a place where people live in suburbs towns – where children romp in green fields, ride bikes and play softball… far away from the grind of city traffic, the filth of city gutters, the dan...

LIB200 Assignment #3

For my research paper I want to do something that I feel is an opener for many people. I am torn between two different ideas for this research paper. The first idea, being a close reading analysis. I enjoyed a glimpse of the World’s Fair and its technological portrayal of technology and suburbia. How people wanted to live the American dream of owning a house and a car. Also how people desperately needed work and the World’s Fair being like a business for those who needed employment after the war. I can also compare it to global warming and how it could have affect the world more than helping it. The second impression is the “Popular Science” which is research idea number four. For this idea it would be based on two different cultures that I would explore. It could be science and the humanities being a authoritative idea. The book that I would choose for the paper would be The Tipping Point: How little Things Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell. This book has many different ...

LIB 200- Assignment #4

In my personal view for blog number four, I believe that robots have become acceptable to most people. I say this since technology is used every day whether it be a bus, car, train, cellphone, laptop, computer etc. In my eyes I see them as technological robots that are needed to be used by human in order to work but at the same time it may not always be the case. I believe it to be a start to surpass (maybe) human intelligence. I also think that a reason robots are accepted because they are an achievement to people; similar to the promise for the future of software agents. Robots or any kind of artificial intelligent technology gives me both the ‘awe’ and the fear of robot technology. I look at films like the Terminator which is comparable to a post-apocalyptic film for humans in which robots (terminator) have surpassed human intelligence which is the fear for this kind of technology. The awesome part is again what human have accomplished with bare hands and mentally. Also, the 19...

Popular science today seems to amuse people of different perspectives. It has become known on TV, in books and films. Writer Edward Rothstein of the New York Times believes that today, science is worn into popular entertainment which I agree it is. There are so many things that deal with scientific problematical issues that scare people. Honestly it is awesome but it really doesn’t go into that scientific field of what science in reality is. It is fine to gain knowledge of innovative things, especially when there are movies like of mass destruction or the man kind/world coming to an end but where the theories are. For example District 9, a science fiction movie of aliens which are inspired by scientific possibility. It is believed that the government is hiding secret chemical that scientist have been trying to use to gain control and power or an experiment gone wrong. Science gives me a sense of initiative roles. Wikus van de Merwe, is a manager at the MNU Department of Alien Affairs....

Assign. #1 lib200

I am more of humanities person but I do have the science person in me. My major is psychology which is the study of the mind. It focuses on observation. While studying this major I ask What makes a person behave a certain way? Why are they so threatening? Why do they believe in such things? etc. It is also a combination of establishment as a separate science from physiology and philosophy. It is relevant to the assistance of nature vs. nurture. I believe that many people do believe in science now more than ever. It is not about one subject but many piled into an idea/ theory. Today psychologist utilize systematic methodologies to learn and depict conclusions about human thought and behavior.

Im back!!

My professor wanted students to create a blog where we can communicate with one another. Today I am writing once again to get a good grade for my class. Honestly it is nice to have your own blog post where one can communicate with others even though theres facebook, twitter, myspace etc... But for school related this is perfect. Well today i am back and ready to meet new classmates. Also here to shiw my empathy for others. Hope you enjoy getting to know me!:-)

About the e-portfolio

With the e-portfolio it makes me feel that I have something more than a resume. Here people can view my educational goals and my class work. They can see how I have improved my writing and see that I have tried to better my probability at getting my employment or an internship. I believe my critical thinking has improved a bit since making my own e-portfolio because it is personal without being private. It’s not a social site but a significant portfolio that helps me to figure what I want, what I need and what I may have and get? It is about putting myself in better positions then I would if I were going to the place knowing that they know about me. Yes it is digital, but it is better than me going to a place and becoming nervous. If I get an interview then this helps me know what I necessitate for a profession. But I also understand why it is important. It helps others understand who you are and what you are about? It gives employers an idea and they can find if you are what th...

*Final Reflection*

I met with people from different nationalities they were very diverse. During the few weeks that we had in the CEP121 course we got to learn about each and every student at least a bit. Like their name, major, and why they were so interested in being what they wanted to do. Many were already established into a career path and a few were still unsure but like everyone else we wanted to be successful and have good job opportunities. From this course, I was able to understand more about my career and I found myself doing some research of my own. I found that some of the activities that we did were not just to prepare us for the internship but to be aware that it is not as simple as it looks. It was to practice/organize ourselves for the future. Some activities that we did in class were helpful like the lingering thoughts because we don’t really have time to put our thoughts into paper because some work and others go to school. Some have families and work with school and I feel that, ...

Life Skills!

Life skill are important to have in any field goal that one is going to. There are so many different life skills that one can learn so here are a few. These skills have every thing to do with your life whether its time management, problem solving, communication, living financial situations, and family as well. It’s also to be able to understand challenges, different opportunities and obstacles in order to shape a better and stronger person. Its about the hidden talents that one finds out to do when they start a job opportunity. It is when you know that are developing new skills; to be intelligent, productive, hardworking. Its about earning a good living and being able to provide enough food, protection, clothing, education, and medical care. Time has everything to do with the way you work and the way you function. Being able to get to work on time and doing other thin...

Lingering/Class Work

When we worked in groups during the class, we got to talk about our lingering thoughts. We spoke of work and wanting to have a job after we each graduate. We knew that this was making us stress over employment and having benefits but then we started giving each other thoughts and advice and made each other felt a bit more at ease because though we have done research we still need to something to think about. After a few minutes we were started talking about what we were going to do for our finale on the last day of this CEP121 course. The professor had told us that he had in his previous class, students who did a TV segment like the love connection. We as a group were thinking, what could we do that could make every one laugh and enjoy to what we did? We were coming up with so many different ideas that they seemed far fetched and too difficult because we had too little time.

In Groups

The other day when we worked in groups it was with different people but similar goals. We spoke about our life skills, cover letters, and about our resumes. We got to know each other a little bit more. We mentioned that we wanted to work with people with different backgrounds and different accomplishments in life. It was nice talking to them because it was very laid back and we are hoping for good job opportunities in the future. Each one explained our major and why we wanted to do what we were studying for. We spoke about our love for music, sports, cars, pervious jobs, and helping others. We got to discussing our pervious occupations and what had happened? We spoke of experiences and how we could pass this course with having a busy life after school. Of course we all want to succeed in life because that is the point why we are going the extra effort in school. We were laughing and talking about how we were all connected with our group members. We did not know at fir...

Successful person Interview

I found a few people that I felt were successful. I spoke to one of my brothers best friends. His name is Christopher, and he lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is the only child in his family and his parents are divorced but they maintain a mutual friendship. He works to help his mother with some bills. He works in an office building in Manhattan with computers because he graduated from computer science. But he also has a part time job in a game store. He loves graphics and all that tech stuff which I find very difficult and amusing at the same time. He told me that one thing “I will love is my job because of the effort that I’ve put into and it’s something that I have always wanted to accomplish by myself”. At first I didn’t get it but he explained that it is something that he did on his own and his parents had a big part because it always affected him and for once he did something for himself. It wasn’t about pleasing his parents but about him. Without having a positive out view yo...

Resume Tips!

1. Never put your age into your resume. Nothing that will state your birth, social security, or any information that may be capable of some taking your identity. Though some people ask for your address that may be alright in some cases. 2. Also use a format that can be easily read by those who are interviewing you. You don’t want them asking you what this or that means in your resume if it out of order. Use a font size of 10 to 12 for better neatness and make sure that your resume is not more than two pages. 3. Do not become a liar. If you have something outrageous just know that it might not help you unless you know what you are doing. Example: if you worked at some place and you just did faxing and telephone calls don’t say you were an assistant and you ran errands. Make sure not to go overbroad. 4. Use position description like including job titles, any qualifications, any knowledge, or skills that you have been put in and know how to handle. 5. W...

Some skills

Some successful life skills are talents that come to people naturally. Skills like cleaning, reading, seeing and problem solving. The way people manage their time is important. Time has everything to do with the job or career that you choose to do. Its about how long is it going to take for you to accomplish a goal or learning new abilities. Helping others is a life skill like training people to use a computer or teaching them a new program. Other skills are like managing your money, making new friends or co-workers and keeping you’re them. Learning to fix things taking calculations on how things should go and be done. What is safe and good for people to do/use. It is also about learning new skills that will better your speech, performance and mentally. You also may want to have skills in which you can contribute to your community because you may never know when you may need them depending what they are. Managing your money is very imperative. You need to have a list like a check book...

First Day

On the first day of our CEP course I was already in a bad mood. I had to register for a another course that was mandatory for this class. I did not know and I had to rush before they would close the offices in the c-building. I was late for my Fundamentals of Professional Advancement course. The professor was cool though he explained to us what this course was about and what we should expect to do while in CEP. Professor William Beaufort told us to get up and sit in a round circle. Then he told us this was one activities that he had for us before class was over. We had to say our name, our major and career motivation/ goals. Most of my class mates knew what they wanted to do and others wanted a better job that paid better. Others had work experience and wanted to become more professional by coming back to school pursuing their college degree. Myself I knew what I wanted to be now that I had something that I knew I could improve. I knew that I wanted to work with children...

Activity 2.1

I want to be a mentor for many people to gain knowledge of what Developmental disability is? It is not just about children who are mentally challenged but as well as different kinds of disabilities like learning, mobility, self-care, self direction. This happens affects them daily and the way they function. Ten years from now I see myself teaching children and moving up to adolescents and teens. Maybe I will teach in New York still and have other people there teaching. The people around me are people who are dedicated and have the patience and the ability to want to teach the less fortunate. I want to have a recognitions over others, and contribute to the state of their condition. The rewards that I would receive is the happiness and the smile on the children’s face. Just for them to know, that I care about them and that I find this satisfying. I see people around having a positive out look on life for these children. I see myself successful even though its taking time. I love tea...

Chapters 2 and 3.

Chapter two and three they both are more on your career satisfaction, Personal Development, and personality types. When you pick a career you have to pleased with your choice because then you will never be satisfied, you want a occupation that is about yourself like your personality. It is about the requirement tat are set for a specific job. I feel in chapter two though it was about values and about our own personal identities and in chapter three it was about skills in personal identity. In chapter three, it about the abilities that one has acquired. Also the ability, to learn new skills to bettering their options. In addition, you have to understand if what fits best in your workplace and those that work around you as well. When I first started at LaGuardia I was going to become a Spanish teacher because I knew that it was a language that I could speak, understand, read, and write. But, before that I wanted to study something with business because I was in a technical school. There ...
